Fire Ecology, Fire Behavior and Native Plant Effects

Location: North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center

This course covers the basics of fire ecology and especially fire effects. Topics will include how fire behaves with different fuel types, and how that behavior affects plants and soil. Participants will learn about how different plant species and types, such as sprouting or non-sprouting shrubs or trees, or lilies or grasses, respond to heat from fire. The field portion will include looking at common local, native plants that are fire dependent or thrive on fire. We'll look at what allows them to survive or thrive with fire, such as burls, or underground sprouting stems or roots, or
